Crossroads

Thursday, December 31, 2009 | 0 comments

"Karl Muller was in Mons at the beginning of September and he took this shot on the Place de Flanders, a major crossroads in the south east part of the city. It is interesting to see that the rider in the camouflaged smock on the NSU motorcycle is armed with a British Sten which was quite capable of firing German 9mm ammunition."

Karl & Mitten

For some reason, black cats seem to enjoy motorcycle rides than any other kind. The famous Rastus from New Zealand was also a black cat.

"Karl began animal communication with his cat, 'Mitten'. She would ride on the handlebars of his motorcycle which caught the attention of Hollywood's top animal trainer, Ray Berwick. An apprenticeship followed, with Karl Working at Universal Studios, training and presenting animal stars for major feature films and TV shows. Shows include 'Omen II', 'High Anxiety', 'Baretta', and 'Circus of the Stars'."

The animal trainer, Ray Berwick describes meeting with Karl and Mitten in this page.

Karl and Mitten are riding Yamaha XS650 in this picture, but if you go to see the video, you will see them ride period appropriate Honda CB750 Four Chopper. Pretty Sweet.

Snowy day

Saturday, December 26, 2009 | 0 comments

Snow covered up the street pretty good. Just to make the tradition going, I went for a motorcycle ride. I went down about half dozen times, and a car which carried happy women who appeared to be coming back from her Christmas dinner stopped next to me and asked if I was okay. I told them with a big smile that I was having awesome time.

2008 April, Brands Hatch British Superbikes race was abandoned due to the heavy snow. They rescheduled next month and fans who bought tickets were able to use the same ticket. Yet, it must have been bitch to get there if you were taking time off and travel long way to see the races. Not to mention all the teams and crews had to do the same... Anyway, I found those pictures surreal.

I wondered some crazy racer would run the track.

Stuffed Animals

They are always fun. Kids love them soft toys and girls adore them. If you are a grown man and collect those, you might feel less masculine.

My professor used to buy them anytime he saw those at any thrift stores. He would put cramp on its head to flatten and dipped in water. So those stuffed animal would have thin head like smashed cartoon character with normal body when it is dry. Why did he do it? you are gonna have to ask him.

Anyway, there is a company called Rocket Craft that makes stuffed engines, cars and motorcycles in Sapporo, Japan. Where also nice beer is brewed. They mostly take commissions to make your car or bikes, but needless to say, it will cost you a chunk of change. Engine from 50 bucks to 300 bucks, car is starting from 350 to 400 bucks. If you want special tag plate on it, it will cost 40 bucks extra. Motorbikes start from 500 bucks to whatever depending on how complicated it is make. Those prices doesn't include shipping and hiring a translator. Both car and motorbike will be about 15-16 inches long. They also make trains, 3 wheelers, and whatever they think they can make. Stuffed Honda generator will be a nice pillow...

If you really want them to make your own, I suggest emailing them with Japanese or easy to understand English first. They will of course need the pictures of your car or bike to get you a quote.

Clara Wagner 1907

Tuesday, December 22, 2009 | 0 comments

Clara was the daughter of the manufacturer of the Wagner Motorcycle. She may have been the first woman to join the Federation of American Motorcyclists in 1907. This was the predecessor of the AMA. She was among the top riders in a 1910 365 mile endurance race. However, she was denied a trophy because she was only a woman and unofficial. I don't know for sure but she may have used a satchel.

Louise Menzer Scherbyn is a founder of WIMA (Women's International Motorcycle Association) which has grown into a world wide association of women and motorcycle and embraces countries as far apart as Australia, New Zealand in the southern hemisphere to Sweden and Finland in the Arctic north, and from central Europe to Japan since its origin of 1950's.

She greatly contributed in promoting women in motorcycling, including lifting the ban on women holding international racing licenses.

They should teach that in Women's study class along with Susan B. Anthony.

Paper Delivery Super Cub

There are many "Do You Have a Honda?" commercial series. This one features a Super Cub. I did newspaper delivery in my youth. I sucked at it. I was riding a bicycle so it was not as fun as riding motorcycles.

Super Cub was developed for delivery in mind; that is why it is operational with one hand. Imagine the time you would waste by pulling clutch and find neutral then reach for the delivery items...As you see in this ad, in Japan you can not throw the paper on the front lawn or by the front door like in the US. It is more work there. Sometimes you had to hide the paper where only the subscriber could find.

Staged Photo

In 1947, the event that become known as the Hollister Riot occurred on the 4th of July Celebrations in Hollister, CA. It was a motorcycle rally that featured 4,000 members of the American Motorcycle Association. Motorcycle rallies had become increasingly popular in the post World War Two era as more and more men were taking up the hobby of group motorcycle riding.

The crowd of 4,000 people was several times more than had been expected, and the small town was overwhelmed by bikers who were forced to sleep on sidewalks and in parks. About 50 people were arrested during the event, most for public intoxication, reckless driving, and disturbing the peace. Some were fighting and racing in the streets; there were 60 reported injuries, of which 3 were serious. The AMA allegedly stated, “the trouble was caused by the one per cent deviant that tarnishes the public image of both motorcycles and motorcyclists”, coining the term “one-percenter” to describe “outlaw” bikers.

The above photo of Eddie Davenport, a member of a now defunct club called the Tulare Riders, was staged by a San Francisco Chronicle photographer named Barney Peterson amidst beer-bottles. (Peterson got there after the riots). The photo finally ran in Life magazine under the caption, “Cyclist’s Holiday: He and his friends terrorize a town.”

The 1953 film The Wild One (starring Marlon Brando) was inspired by the event and based on the article run in Life magazine.

via Life magazine

The funny thing is that we have many pictures like this without being staged by photographers . I gotta tell you that photographers love to stage- demand what you need to do to make a good picture (in his/her mind). Almost all of pictures in newspaper are staged somehow. Especially in where we are. Eagles...

here's Akira Yanagawa towing Dirk Auer at 270kph behind his Kawasaki ZX12R. that's a little over 170mph. apparently Auer holds the World Roller Blade Speed Record of 192mph. that's set being towed behind a Porsche of some kind.

Found the set in the garage. They were wrapped in plastic zip lock bag so figured they would be in better shape than other sets. Which was proven to be wrong...

Everything was locked up like they were glazed with epoxy. No.4 is pitted like teeth of 4 year old kids whose parents could not teach the kid to brush teeth due to their own drug addiction.

You 4 are dirty dirty girls.

Looks like need rebuild kits...

UPDATE:
No. 4 is almost beyond repair....

Less visible than motorcycles, not to mention no head lights, no horns, no shock absorbers, and possible animals on the road, this fun looking ride could get real ugly in .1 second.
