Zoo Flak Tower....Tiergarten, Berlin
Sunday, March 7, 2010
these towers were erected soon after British bomb raids on Berlin in 1940 on the direct orders of Der Fuhrer. this one is in Berlin's Tiergarten near the Zoo. the walls were 3.5 meters thick of poured concrete and steel mesh. contemporary bombs made little of no impression on them. in any case aircraft tended to fly around them when possible. on the top were batteries of Flak 44 128mm anti-aircraft guns. also at various places were 20mm and 37mm guns. these could also be used to shoot at ground targets. the Flak Towers were the last places to be surrendered to the allies after the Battle of Berlin as they were virtually impregnable. they only had to surrender after running out of food and water. several still exist.
