the first Ducati Motorcycle

Ducati in 1946 began production of a small 48cc 4cycle engine with a two speed gear box meant to be put on a bicycle. it was called the Cucciolo{pup or puppy}because of the exhaust sound. in 1948 Ducati began to build a bike with engine attached. this engine was produced from 1946-1956 and went from 48cc to 65cc. the engine was actually designed by a lawyer named Aldo Farinelli. it was rather interesting in that it had pull rods to actuate the valves instead of push rods. from this humble beginning came the fast Ducatis of today. the first picture is a 1950 Cucciolo and the second is a 1948 model. the two speed transmission was normally shifted by the pedals although for an extra price one could have a lever controlled shift.
