Spielberg No Motorcycle Lover

Saturday, July 31, 2010 | 0 comments

I am a movie lover and grew up watching many of Steven Spielberg directed ones. "Jaws" prevented me from swimming in Ocean for very long time, ( I was a competitive swimmer when I was a kid so I could swim) "1941" nurtured my off-color sense of humor. The popularity of "E.T." made me rebel against majority. -I still haven't seen the movie.
Well, I enjoyed the hell out of Indy Jones series but I was bit upset about Spielberg's treatment toward motorcycles. Well, Indy series was more of cartoon than those serious films like Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's list, so the details did not matter that much but putting 1938 Nazis on 1977 Honda XL500S was too off to me. As you see, they cover the bike up with bunch of stuff but if you see them in action in the movie, it is pretty obvious that they are not BMW or possibly-confiscated-other-European-made-motorcycles. In the same movie, Henry and Indy were running away from those Nazis, riding 1988 Dnepr MT 11 with a sidecar which was supposed to be BMW R75. Well, the Dnepr is a copy of BMW just like Ural or Chang Jiang and at least it's got a boxer motor...

The very sad 4th Indy Jones came out when I was already an adult with bunch of motorcycle knowledge, so when I saw brand new 2007 Harley-Davidson FXSTS Soft tail Springer Classic was used in a chase scene, I was quite sad. Maybe If I was a kid with full of potentials and dreams, I would not have thought much of it but as an old motorcycle enthusiast, seeing the twin cam head and front disc brake on a bike in supposedly the year of 1957, was little too much. As we all know, the first production bike with a disc brake was 1969 Honda CB750 four. The Halery they used, seems like they did very little to look like the one in 50's...
In the special feature of the movie, Spielberg talks about making the kid from "Even Steven" watch the movie "The Wild One" to prepare for the role of "Mutt", then goes on " I loved it when he appears on screen just like Marlon Brando did on a Harley..." Umm...Brando was riding a Triumph in the movie, Mr. Spielberg...

In the recent news, it was reported that Mr. Spielberg was "so paranoid about security at his office, he keeps a never-used motorcycle permanently parked outside in case he needs to make a getaway"

Motorcycles are meant to be ridden to me...Never-used? Permanently parked outside? He should get a small tank instead of the poor bike. I bet he doesn't even know how to ride.

Stainless Steel Wire Art

Shi Jindian is a Chinese artist, born in 1953 in Sichuan Province, China and graduated from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, Chongqing, China.

Utilizes woven steel wire for his sculptures

"After searching for years for 'a material that was brand new, completely nontraditional', he settled on steel wires. By trial and error, he learned how to crochet the two-dimensional strands into three-dimensional forms, using tools of his own devising. His wire meshes start out as wrappings around some common object. When the mesh is complete, Shi Jindian destroys or extracts the object, leaving only its steel exoskeleton. The result, he says, is a kind of fiction, a virtual reality that can be walked around and touched."

This Blue Chang Jiang 750 side car took him 3 years....

Royal Enfield Bullet

Royal Enfield never went away. (Well the production in UK ended) Kept going in India and new ones are equipped with electric fuel injection, 500cc single air-cooled OHV , single disc brake on front and gets almost 80mpg. Its engine output is bit weak for my taste ...27.5 BHP, 41.3 Nm @ 4000 rpm but if it comes with this girl I don't mind owning it. The price starts from 6000 bucks. And they sell kits to make yours into cafe racer, scrambler and such from 2000 bucks... Rumor says the both the girl and the bike are relatively high maintenance.

Mumbai Iron for Real?

What did I tell you? Harley Davidson has announced that they're considering an assembly plant in India. Haha!!

The company would consider taking that step as Indian sales increase, said Rod Copes, Harley-Davidson's senior vice president of international sales, marketing and business development.

Harley also would consider

manufacturing motorcycles in other countries for those markets, a step beyond assembling imported parts into completed bikes.

... "Getting the tariff reduced would be ideal. But we have not seen action on that yet," Copes said.

Some suspect that HD might follow the path of Royal Enfield. They began assembling motorcycles in India back in the mid 1950s, then making parts there, then the entire bike. Ironically the British company went under while the one in India was going strong. Now India is the only place Royal Enfields are still manufactured.

International sales are an important component of any company's long term growth and right now, international sales are rising. If you have to build there to sell there, then you build there.

By having the assembly lines in India, HD will hurt the image and identity of American motorcycles. The tradition.. The heritage...You can't deny that its image of Harley riders and lifestyle has generated huge chunk of sales. It is hard to believe people choose HD motorcycles because of pure performance. If you begin building motorcycles in other countries, those sales are sure to put in jeopardy...

A Honda isn't given points as a Japanese bike since they are built in other places as well. In fact, GoldWing was developed and built in Columbus Ohio...Pretty much American bike...Triumph isn't British, either,it's Triumph, for the same reasons. When Harley begins to sever the American manufacturing ties, they enter a new world, and it may be inevitable. How it works for them will be interesting to watch. I can already hear those Harley riders are bitching and moaning...They are never happy....I bet you they do give a fuck about that...

Hey!Let's build Indian motorcycles there. Then it will be real Indian motorcycle. Its logo might have to have turban instead of feather, though...

Hand Signals

There are some hand signals between riders. From universal ones ( Turns, Stop, and Pass me) to ones that varies depending on location or whom you talk to. This was discussed in one of motorcycle enthusiasts sites that I frequently visit. I suggested in comment that we motorcyclists should organize the signs so that all the bikers would know that meaning. Also, most of those signs are for riders that you are riding with; from leaders to followers...and with the new technology like blue tooth communicator, those hand signals might get to be obsolete in the near future.
In Australia, it is common to warn other riders that there are police nearby. Point left index finger upward and circling by your head means "police ahead" there, that means "start your engine" in some area and patting your head(helmet) is used for "the police ahead" in the most of US.

In the site, one guy basically told me to look it up on google, and insisted that all the signs are pretty much the same. It was condescending which I learned to ignore- "If you can't be nice, go to the Internet" right?

I believe Semi-truckers have more nationally organized jargon because they travel all over the country and watch out for each other waaay more than motorcyclists. Motorcyclists often get divided by what kind of bike you ride or how you ride; there are many terms to insult any kind of motorcycles & motorcyclists and those are more commonly known than hand signals. Sad...

Brammo Empulse

Okay this is more like it. Compare to other lame and weak model from Brammo, this bike boosts horsepower rating of 55 with 59lb-ft of torque and a weight of 390lbs. That's comparable to the weight/ power ratio of average 600cc sports bike.

BMW GS series

Monday, July 26, 2010 | 0 comments

BMW GS was developed as dual purpose off-road/on-road bike in 1980. The GS refers to either Gelände/Straße (German: off-road/road) or Gelände Sport. They have typical BMW flat boxer engine but have longer travel suspension and larger front wheels for rough roads.

Some seem to hate the GS series...

I like all kinds of bikes. I don't discriminate based on marque of bikes. I might not like it if you have tasteless custom parts and paint job on it. That will be your taste, not the bike.

Priest The Movie

Apparently the movie is based on
a Korean graphic novel.

I don't know anything about it; seems like something to do with vampires... but I am digging the bikes in the film.
If you visit the link below, you can sneakily watch its teaser. Better do it now if you are interested since it might get taken down soon. Ones from Youtube have already been deleted
