these are pictures of the Kustenpanzerschiff SMS Odin. coastal armoured ship Odin was one of two ships of the class the other being SMS Agir. these ships were not meant for long overseas voyages but to defend the maritime coasts of Germany. they were well armed and armoured for their duty with three 240mm naval rifles main battery and 10 88mm rifles for secondary. main armour belt was 530mm with 200mm on the turrets. the dispensation of the main guns was rather unusual as the two forward guns each had a turret one on the port side and one on the starboard. displacement of the vessel was 4250t. Odin was powered with two triple expansion reciprocating steam engines for a top speed of 15.3kts. the ship was in naval service from commissioning in 1894 until 1919 and was scrapped in 1935. the top picture is a German color postcard of Odin and the second an actual picture of Odin underway. looks like he's cruising right along from the smoke and the bow wave.
