here are pictures of some different types of ship's engines. mostly 19th century but some still used in the 20th and even in this century on preserved and operative vessels. first is a triple expansion paddle engine made in England for use in paddle tugs and cross channel steamers. next is a compound oscillating cylinder engine. as you can see the cylinders move back and forth as the pistons move up and down and turn the crankshaft. third we have an example of a side lever engine as used on a cross Atlantic steam vessel. fourth we have a trunk engine from an early English ironclad battleship and last a Great Lakes Whaleback steamer's vertical triple expansion engine.
