here are a few more pictures of USS Monitor. first is another photograph showing some officers examining the damage to Monitor's turret after the battle. as you can see even though using only shells the Virginia was able to put some deep dents in the turret armour. with armour piercing bolts the Virginia's Brooke rifles may well have been able to penetrate Monitor's armour. forward of the turret can be seen the slope of the pilot house which was also damaged in the action. next is a picture of Monitor being launched. and finally a picture of Monitor before the battle.
