Heat-related illnesses (e.g., heat cramps, heat exhaustion, heat syncope, or heatstroke) can occur when high ambient temperatures overcome the body's natural ability to dissipate heat.
During 1999--2003, a total of 3,442 deaths resulting from exposure to extreme heat were reported in the US (annual mean: 688). People on a stranded rescue raft are more likely to die from exposure than drowning.
