first two pictures are of the USN double turreted monitor Onondaga. she was one of the most powerful armored vessels in the world at this time. even the ironclads of the British Royal Navy would have had trouble with Onondaga. picture 3 is of some US Marines at the Washington, D.C. Navy Yard. Marines like these would have served aboard ships like the ones in the next two pictures....first the USS Pensacola a steam frigate and then a deck scene aboard the USS Pawnee. notice the Dahlgren smoothbore cannon along the ship's side.
