a picture of one of the engine room gauge boards of the protected cruiser USS Olympia. here one would read steam pressure in all cylinders as well as rpm, temperatures and etc. i've been in the engine rooms of the Olympia, they are quite impressive. i had to sneak in as they weren't open to the public at the time. the Olympia was Admiral George Dewey's flagship at the Battle of Manila Bay in the Spanish-American War of 1898.
