one of my all time favorites in aircraft world is the Kawanishi H6K series of flying boats called "Mavis" by the allies. originally designed as a commercial aircraft Mavis became a long range reconnaisance aircraft for the IJN. She was slow but had a range of slightly over 4,000 miles and an operational ceiling of better than 31,000 feet. unfortunatly none of these magnificent machines survived the war except for a few used in Indonesia. these also are no longer with us.
