the engines were GE J-47-19's designed for use as booster engines on the B-36 inter-continental bomber. this was an experiment to check on the practicability of high speed rail and jet propulsion. the M-497 known to it's crew as the Black Beetle made 183.85 mph in the summer of 1966. a record never beaten yet on US rails.
