a little late with Armoured Cruiser Thursday but, better late than never. this is the Royal Navy armoured cruiser HMS Good Hope. she was sunk along with the armoured cruiser HMS Monmouth at the Battle of Coronel off the coast of Chile November 1, 1914. Admiral Christopher Cradock was sent with an inferior fleet to find the German East Asiatic Squadron under Admiral Graf Maxilian von Spee. unfortunatly for him he found it. the German armoured cruisers SMS Gneisenau and SMS Scharnhorst were faster and more powerful than the Royal Navy ships. both British armoured cruisers were lost with all hands, over 1600 men. the other 2 Royal Navy ships consisting of the light cruiser HMS Glasgow which was damaged in the action and the auxiliary cruiser HMS Otranto fled and managed to escape. the top picture shows Good Hope at anchor and an inset of Admiral Cradock. second picture is HMS Good Hope at sea. third picture is of some of the sailors aboard the ship. last picture is a gun crew inside the casemate with one of the 6" guns. all of these people of course perished with their ship. war at sea is a very deadly business, if you're not blown up you drown, except in very lucky circumstances where some are saved after the battle.
