this is the famous Gastown{in Vancouver, B.C.}steam clock. designed and built by Raymond Saunders a Canadian Horologist in 1977. the other pictures are of the single expansion double acting engine and the weight chain and pendulum. the clock is not steam powered the steam is used to power the mechanism which brings the weight balls to the top where their weight powers the clock itself in the traditional manner. the clock has whistles on top which designate the hour and the quarter hours. the clock doesn't need a boiler as there is a steam heat line beneath the ground which supplies it with low pressure steam at 17psi. i lived in Vancouver from 1977 through 1979 so i have actually seen and listened to the clock. as you can see in the picture the mechanism is visible to the passer-by so one can stand and watch as long as they want.
