this thursday we have the Imperial Russian Navy Battleship Retvizan. built by William Cramp and Sons Philadelphia, Pa. and commissioned 3/23/1902. Retivizan was 386'6" in length and displaced 12,912t. she was powered by two vertical triple expansion steam engines for 16,000IHP with two shafts and made 18.6kts. top speed. her main battery was four 12" naval rifles and her secondary twelve 6" rifles with numerous other 3", 1.9", 1.5" guns plus 6 torpedo tubes. the ship's main armour belt was 9" of Krupp Steel and 9"of same on main turret faces. sent to the Russian Far East Fleet at Port Arthur in Manchuria she was torpedoed and sunk at the Battle of Port Arthur 2/8-9/1904 by the Imperial Japanese Navy. Retvizan was raised and repaired and then took part in the Battle of the Yellow Sea 8/10/1904. once again damaged after stopping the Japanese attack on the Russian Flagship Tsarevich she returned to Port Arthur and was sunk at anchor by Japanese 11" howitzer batteries. after the end of the Russo-Japanese war Retvizan was raised and repaired by the Japanese{1906-1908}. the ship was then renamed IJNS Hizen and became a unit of the IJN. Hizen took part in WW1 and the Russian Revolution of 1917-1921 and was stricken from the IJN in 1923. the old ship was towed to sea and sunk as a target ship by other IJN ships in the Bungo Channel 7/12/1924. first picture is of Retvizan from the stern and under way. next is a picture of her from forward port side and third is a picture of the crew about to receive their grog ration which in the Russian Imperial Navy was watered down vodka instead of rum as in the Royal Navy. fourth we again see Retvizan from the stern but this time decorated overall with flags for some sort of naval ceremony. finally is a picture of the ship when new in the New York Naval Yard. ahead of her is the USN submarine USS Holland.
