MotoGP: Japanese GP postponed

Tuesday, March 15, 2011

The Japanese GP was originally scheduled for April 24. It has been moved to October 2nd. The terrible earthquake hit all over Japan, and several tsunamis have hit the coast, two of the four Japanese motorcycle manufacturers have found themselves forced to stop production. Here is mind boggling before after earthquake/tsunami picutres from ABC news -hover over the pic to toggle.

The Motegi circuit has suffered minor damage, but given the very critical situation in the country (there is also the looming nuclear threat), it was decided to postpone the race, now scheduled for October 2 next. The FIM / Dorna have made this decision after consulting with the heads of the circuit, and place the event in the only big Japanese holiday break, including the race of Aragon Motorland of 18 September and to Phillip Island, October 16.

Carmelo Ezpeleta immediately advanced the proposal to move the Grand Prix to give the possibility to recover from the country's largest earthquake in the history of the Rising Sun. Even last year the Japanese race was postponed because of the cloud lifted Icelandic volcano, which has locked the global air traffic by preventing drivers and teams to reach Japan.
