the armored cruiser USS Maine. the famous USS Maine sank in Havana Harbor in 1898 thus starting the Spanish-American War. the Maine was originally classed as an Armored Cruiser. later this classification was changed to 2nd class battleship and as such she sank. to this day no one knows for sure what sank the Maine. probably not the Spanish nor a mine or torpedo of any kind but rather a fire in the coal bunkers which caused the ammunition to blow up thus destroying the ship. spontaneous combustion in coal bunkers was a fairly common thing in coal fired ships. 1st picture is USS Maine at anchor. 2nd is Maine entering Havana Harbor 3 weeks before blowing up. and last is a picture of the time showing the ship blowing up.
