Armored Cruiser USS California later named USS San Diego{1914} when the name California was given to a new Battleship. California was a Pennsylvania Class ship the next to the last class of Armored Cruiser in the USN. she was the only major warship of the USN lost in WW1. sunk off Fire Island, NY July 19,1918 by a mine laid by German U-boat U-156. much of the wreck still exists to this day and is a popular place for scuba divers to explore.
