Henry Maudslay 1771-1831. Maudslay was a great British machine tool inventor and innovator. he was the first person to combine the slide rest, the lead screw and change gears in a lathe. this allowed things to be made accurately and repeatedly the same. a picture below is of his first screw making lathe an extremely important innovation in machine tools. without tools such as this and others we would not have had the industrial revolution and the evolution to modern machine tools of the cnc type. if not for Henry Maudslay and others of his ilk we wouldn't be enjoying our motorcycles and automobiles today.
