Armored Ship Thursday

Thursday, October 28, 2010

this thursday we have USS Chicago one of the first 4 new American Steel Navy warships. she was a protected cruiser thus having an armored protective deck over the machinery and ammunition spaces. commissioned in 1889 Chicago was armed with four 8" rifles, eight 6" rifles and two 5" rifles plus assorted smaller guns and 2 Gatlings. her armament put her equal to similar ships in foreign navies but, her engines were not up to date. she originally had two compound overhead beam engines while everyone else was going to triple expansion. later on Chicago was re- engined with triple expansion engines. she was also at that time re-armed with more modern guns for her main battery. she was 325ft. long and her top speed was around 15kts or a little more. she lasted in service from 1889 to 1936 when she was sold out of the USN and was supposed to be scrapped. however the old ship had other ideas and foundered at sea while being towed to her scrapping place. top two pictures are both starboard and port sides in her original form with full barque rigging as well as steam. she later gave up the sailing rig after being re-engined and re-armed. the last picture is of Chicago in this guise. a much cleaner ship and more modern looking as well after the rigging was gone.
