here's something we don't see much anymore. as recently as my childhood there were quite a few of them being displayed. apparently they originated in the middle ages as the pole with the red and white bands represented blood and bandage because barber's let blood and pulled teeth in addition to cutting hair. the red and white ones are typically European and the red, white and blue ones from the USA. perhaps a bit of patriotism. in some parts of Asia they could also denote the presence of a brothel. the first picture is a medieval pole from England. the next is an antique one from the USA. the next three are English or American as per the colors. i never got a free whiskey for getting my hair cut as a child.
