Armoured Ship Thursday with Toys
Wednesday, November 17, 2010
i thought i might as well keep up with the toy theme for armored ship thursday. these things were really popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries. this first one was made in Germany i imagine late 19th cen. by Marklin. some of these things had real steam engines in them. toys for the adult or the boys with indulgent and rich parents. the third picture is of the WW2 German Panzerschiffe "Admiral Graf Spee". they were sometimes called pocket battleships by the allies. really more like a heavy cruiser. 2nd picture looks like a model of a King George V class battleship of the Royal Navy. you'll notice these ships are fairly large and floating in the water. they are radio controlled vessels, probably electric powered. but notice the main battery guns in the large turrets. they are actually bb guns. these ships go out in the lake and shoot at each other. they make holes in each other and sometimes one gets into almost sinking condition. for the last two we go back to the 19th or early 20th cen. the first of these looks like some kind of cruiser or large gunboat French by the look of her. check out the brass funnel and steam dome. this is probably one with a real steam powerplant aboard. last picture is of a French Battleship of some sort. i know it looks squat and clumsy but it is actually around 3ft. long and is equipped with a steam plant. i think i could stand to have any of these in my collection.
