Owen-Magnetic

a good picture of a 1921 Owen-Magnetic touring car. the Owen-Magnetic used an electric transmission for an infinite number of speeds to drive the car. the in-line 6cyl. engine drove a generator which in turn powered an electric motor which turned the drive shaft. the electric motor was thus, in effect, the transmission. it worked quite well but was also very expensive when compared to typical mechanical transmissions. this is the same principle which powers the diesel-electric locomotive and in some cases, ships such as the icebreaker in which i served in the USN.
