some more locomotives you'll probably never see

Wednesday, April 27, 2011

here are a few more rare diesel locomotives. first we have an EMD E-1 the first of the famous E's. next is an EMD E-5{A} these were made only for the Burlington RR. there is actually one of these left and it is i think in operable condition. third is the famous Fairbanks-Morse "Trainmaster". this locomotive was quite advanced for the time. they were popular on commuter runs because of their rapid acceleration. next is the Fairbanks-Morse "Erie" so called because they were built by GE in their Erie, PA plant. Fairbanks-Morse had no place big enough to build them. and last is the Fairbanks-Morse C-Liner which could be had with several different engine options and wheel configurations. these were all powered by the Fairbanks-Morse opposed piston diesel engine. the railroads didn't like this engine because they weren't used to it. i operated them in the navy and found them to be a very tough engine which would run under the most trying conditions.
