air conditioning

since my air conditioner quit last night i've been looking at air conditioning on the internet. the first picture is of Willis Carrier standing by part of his first air conditioner which he invented in 1902. air conditioning has actually been around longer than that. the first systems used things such as ammonia as refrigerants. worked fine but was quite dangerous when the system sprang a leak. freon was invented in 1928 and made air conditioning much safer. the second picture is of an early Fedders ad for window air conditioners. i remember these from traveling around with my grandparents in the late 1940's and early 50's of the last century. third is a picture of Stalin's armored rail car. apparently it contained the first air conditioning system in Russia. couldn't have a glorious leader be uncomfortable of course. and the last picture is of a person repairing a 16th floor air conditioner somewhere in Russia. it appears as though the common man there can now be as comfortable as his excellent dictator was in the past. he won't be comfortable though if those little sheet metal brackets break off while he's on top of the unit. well, it hasn't made me any cooler to make this digression into some of air conditioning's history but it's cooling off outside now and maybe will rain. in any case the next few days are to be cooler and my air will be fixed Monday. it's only 88 degrees in here after all and i grew up with no air so what the hell? i'm going out on the front porch and having a big glass of wine with ice cubes in it.
