Marlin-Ballard #3
Saturday, August 7, 2010
in my recent great trek to the west i acquired one of these. a Marlin-Ballard #3. made by Marlin with a Ballard single shot dropping block action in .22lr. mine looks somewhat different than this since it is a benchrest rifle with a heavy barrel and higher comb stock. this is a gallery rifle. shooting galleries used to be just about everywhere, i've shot in a couple when i was a child. the action was originally designed and made by one Charles Ballard. the guns have been made by several different companies over the years culminating in the Marlin-Ballard. as far as i can determine no originals have been made since 1889. there have been new ones made in modern times. these originals are all antiques and can be bought and sold freely without any hassle by modern gun laws. very nice for the collectors of such magnificent firearms.
