these pictures of IJN Shokaku{flying crane} were painted by Japanese artist Takeshi Yuki, himself a veteran of WW2.
Shokaku was the sister ship of IJN Zuikaku the two ship class was name after her. her specs. were almost the same as Zuikaku's. Shokaku was lost in the battle of the Phillipine Sea June 19, 1944. she was torpedoed 3 or 4 times by the submarine USS Cavalla. the hits by the torpedoes were all forward and hit bomb storage and avgas storage. this cause a massive explosion thus destroying IJN Shokaku. the top picture shows Shokaku taking aboard an airplane during the battle she is running no doubt at flank speed. the bottom picture is Shokaku on fire and sinking. a sad end to a valiant ship.
