a picture of Hell?

Monday, August 9, 2010

not really but a picture of the fireroom of a coal fired cruiser at flank speed. this was ended by the adoptation of oil fuel in most of the world's navies in the early 20th century. there was an entire class of seamen called stokers who took care of this duty. it was exceedingly hot and dusty, not to mention unpleasant. it was, however, entirely necessary if the ships of the time were to operate successfully and perform their national duties. temperatures could easily get up to 140 degrees F. or hotter.
