let us travel back to yesteryear when all was steam. first picture is a small triple expansion engine. very beautiful indeed. engines such as this could be used{depending on size}for power on a small steam launch or to power the largest ships of the time{late 19th-early 20th century}. next is a picture from 1886 which shows a diagonal compound paddle engine. notice the tractor like seat and large control wheel above the engine. and finally a wonderful Robey cross compound engine. many engines of this type were in commercial use as for instance in mines. i actually came across one in Colorado years ago when exploring some old mine buildings in the mountains around Victor and Goldfield. i wish i could have brought it home but it was far too large and heavy. i contented myself with a large ornate door hinge i found in some rubble under the engine bed.
