narrow gauge action in the Colorado Rockies

Monday, September 20, 2010

these pictures are of the Denver, South Park & Pacific RR in the Colorado Rockies. the first picture shows the opening of the railroad to the Alpine Tunnel. this tunnel was the highest in the Rockies over which locomotives ran. it quite often shut down altogether in the winter as conditions were such as could not be overcome at the time. the second picture is after the Woodstock Slide which obliterated the little station of Woodstock. everyone in Woodstock except one woman was killed. the next picture is a train going to the Alpine Tunnel. next is another train on the way to the tunnel from the west. it is in what is called the Palisades. the final picture is of a type of locomotive called a Mason Bogie. the entire locomotive and tender was on the same frame. the driving wheels and forward pony truck were able to swivel from side to side thus allowing the locomotive to go around tighter curves than would be otherwise possible.
