these are pictures of the USN's first modern armored vessel, USS Atlanta. she was built by John Roach & Sons of Chester, PA and commissioned July 19, 1886. Atlanta had a main battery of two 8" and six 6" rifles and a miscellany of smaller guns. she was 271ft. 3inches long and displaced 3,189tons. powered by a single horizontal compound engine driving a single screw Atlanta was capable of a top speed of 15.60kts. her armor consisted of a 11/2" protective deck over the machinery spaces thus earning her the name of protected cruiser. she also was rigged as a brig and could be sailed after a fashion. USS Atlanta was stricken from the navy list in April of 1912. first picture is of Atlanta's after 8" gun. second a picture of USS Boston and USS Atlanta under sail. an unusual picture, seldom do we get to see any of the early steel navy armored ships under canvas. they were rigged for sail in case of running out of coal with no coaling stations or colliers nearby. the third picture is Atlanta from the port side. next is a picture of Atlanta's first commander Captain Francis M. Bunce. and last we see USS Atlanta with crew manning the yards, firing a salute to the Grand Army of the Republic in 1890.
