the amazing steam turbine

Friday, September 3, 2010

the first steam turbine on record was around 130 B.C. invented by the Greek scientist and engineer Hero of Alexandria. it basically demonstrated the principle of the steam turbine but, was not powerful enough to power anything but itself. Charles Parsons an Englishman 1854-1931 first made the turbine a practical powerplant in 1884. here is a picture of his 1st prototype turbine and boiler. the second picture shows the flow path of the steam through the turbine and it's connection to the electrical generator. the last picture shows the turbine alone with the top casing removed so as to show the turbine interior and the different stages which the steam uses to produce the power. turbines were much smoother in operation, faster turning and more efficient than the reciprocating steam engines in use at the time of their introduction in the above form. steam turbines produce most of the world's electrical power at this time and also power a good many of the world's ships, navy and commercial alike. ships use either the turbine electric shown here or geared turbines where the gears control the rpm of the propellor shafts.
