for this thursday's armored ships we have the USS Milwaukee name ship of a class of 4 double turreted monitors of the USN during the Civil War. these being the USS Milwaukee, USS Chickasaw, USS Kickapoo and USS Winnebago. designed by James B. Eads these ships were equipped with both an Eads designed turret and an Ericcson designed turret. the Eads turret allowed for more elevation of each gun as well as steam powered operation of same while the Ericcson turret was of all manual design. these Monitors were 229ft. long and displaced 1300t. the turrets had 8" armor, the sides of the ship 3" and the deck 1.5". armament was four 11" Dahlgren smooth bore naval guns. they were powered by horizontal non-condensing engines driving four shafts for a top speed of 9kts. all four of these vessels were on the scene at the famous Battle of Mobile Bay. the Chickasaw and the Winnebago actually took part in the battle. in operations after Mobile Bay the Milwaukee was sunk after striking a torpedo. later in 1868 she was raised and some of her materials went into the construction of the Eads Bridge in St. Louis, MO. after the war the Chickasaw was converted into a railroad ferry and the Winnebago and Kickapoo were scrapped in 1874. all pictures have their own captions except the fourth picture may be USS Kickapoo instead of Milwaukee i've seen it with both names. last picture is a schematic showing the arrangement of the ships.
