the magnificent straight 8 engine

here's some engines so we can see what powered some of the speedsters i put up last night. first we have the ohv Buick and this one has the compound carburettor set-up along with the split exhaust headers{this was a factory set-up}. one of these in a 1939 Buick Coupe held the national F-stock record in drag racing for a number of years. next we have a Miller 8 in a Miller Special racing car no specs went with this picture so i don't know anything other than that it is a beautiful engine. you could say that just about every engine Harry Miller built was special though. he was pretty much a home grown engine design genius. third we have the mighty Duesenberg Model SJ DOHC supercharged 8 with 420cu.in and 320hp. that's the supercharger on top of the vertical shaft between the exhaust header pipes. next in line is a 385cu.in. model 745 Packard engine. and last is an Auburn 8 built by Lycoming which was owned by Auburn. i think it is most likely the 268cu.in. un-supercharged 8-100 engine. in any case they are all great engines from designers and builders in the USA. i have a friend who has a Buick in-line 8 and if any of you readers have a set of the compound carburettor/exhaust set-ups i'm sure he would love to have it.
