these are pictures of HNLMS Buffel the first armored vessel of the Royal Netherlands Navy. Buffel was built and launched in Glasgow, Scotland 1868. she was the first all steam powered ship in the Dutch fleet. she had two sisters Schorpionen and Stier who looked much like her and had about the same specifications. Buffel had twin screws and was good for a top speed of 13kts. very respectable for 1868. she had a main armor belt of 6" thickness and 12" of armor on her turret. the turret was armed with two 300lb. Armstrong muzzle loading rifles. Buffel also had a ram and was basically a type of monitor with her single turret and armor. she served as an active unit of the RNLN until 1894 and was then relegated to other duties until becoming a museum ship late in the 20th century. the first picture is a stern view of Buffel at night. second picture is of one of Buffel's sister ships HNLMS Schorpioen as i couldn't find a picture of Buffel showing this view. this ship is also preserved in the Netherlands. you'll notice masts and yards on this ship. Buffel did not have these and was entirely steam powered. last two pictures are of Buffel's bow.
