During his presidency, Reagan put tariff on over 700cc Japanese motorcycles to save Harley-Davidson. The tariff increased the cost of Japanese imports by 40 per cent, decreasing to 10 per cent over five years. The Japanese responded by sleeving down their 750s into unique-to-America 700cc models.
