1961 Simson

Monday, July 5, 2010

here's a couple of pictures of a 1961 Simson. an East German bike similar to a BMW single of the time. this is a 250cc single ohv engine with shaft drive. seems strange to pull a chair with only 250cc's but was very common in Europe. these were pretty gutsy little engines so with the right gearing i imagine they did all right. certainly a nice looking outfit. i had a 1957 Simson when i was in the Navy in the early 1960's. it was a solo without a sidecar. it was also pretty quick as it kept up with the Honda Superhawk's, Dreams and Scramblers all my buddies had. a BMW single would not do that. i later came to find out the Simson folks had developed a racing engine out of the little single. i don't know that mine was exactly that engine but it was a lot peppier than a BMW. sadly i sold it to a Marine who promptly wrecked it. that is one motorcycle i wish i still had.
