Armored Cruiser Thursday

Thursday, July 15, 2010

here's a picture of the USS New York the USN's second armored cruiser. she was Admiral Sampson's flagship during the Spanish-American War. this picture shows New York making good speed, she was capable of 21kts which was quite fast for the late 19th century. with a main battery of six 8" guns she could hold her own with anything but a battleship. the next picture shows loading practice with one of New Yorks 8" guns. since i won't be here for next armored cruiser thursday i'm adding the USS Tennessee she was one of the last class of armored cruisers built for the USN. larger, faster, and much more heavily armed than the New York the Tennessee had a 10" main battery. in this picture Tennessee is shown like the New York above making a good speed as evidenced by the large bow wave. not flank speed or the wave would be larger and the first funnel would be emitting more smoke as would the others as well. coal fired ships were not noted for clean operation. made for impressive pictures though with a huge bow wave and dense clouds of black coal smoke. it made for problems in battle as the gunners sometimes couldn't see what they were shooting at. in only a few years this problem would be mostly solved with oil fired turbines which emitted much less smoke and were faster and more reliable to boot.
