pocket watches

pocket watches seem to be gaining in popularity around the garage these days. indeed they should. they are some of the finest and most precise mechanical instruments ever produced by humans. look at the first picture. they are also in many cases beautiful as well. they are actually small spring powered engines which drive a time telling device that you carry in your pocket. pretty neat, huh? the first picture is a movement from an American Waltham watch. the second is the face of a different Waltham, third is of course a Mickey Mouse watch. actually a cheap watch it still may be worth a bit because of Mickey on the dial. next comes a Soviet Russian watch. i have several of these and they actually keep pretty good time and have a decent jewelled movement. quite a bit for $50. and finally an Elgin, another fine old US brand which is no longer in business. too bad they are not so popular anymore as they combined efficiency, beauty, usefulness, and fine craftsmanship in one small object. more than we can say for the cheap, ugly, plastic digital devices most folks use today.
