since i'm basically an old Navy man i thought i'd throw in a Roman Navy picture. here's a Roman Trireme with marines on deck. that thing with the big spike on it is called a corvus{crow}. it could swivel around and be dropped on the deck of an opposing vessel. the spike stuck in the deck the ships would be locked together and the Roman marines would swarm across and overwhelm the enemy marines and crew. at least that was how it worked if all went properly.
