steam flight

since we all like steam powered things here's an airplane. designed and worked on by William and George Besler of Emeryville, California it flew in April of 1933 at Oakland Airport. the top picture is the engine, a two cylinder compound engine with a 3" bore on the high pressure cylinder a 51/4" bore on the low pressure cylinder and a 3" stroke. it weighed 180lb. and produced 150hp. it ran with steam from a flash boiler and used a condenser for more economy of water use. second picture shows it on the ground running. next is the craft in flight and finally the brothers Besler{William on the right} and the boiler. William the younger brother was apparently the moving force behind the whole thing. after the flight that showed everything worked the Beslers and their steam powered airplane dropped out of sight. and no more was heard of it. very intesting and intriguing in any case.
