Armoured Cruiser Thursday

Thursday, July 8, 2010

since battlecruisers actually started as armoured cruisers i am going to include them. they might be called the ultimate in armoured cruisers. this one is the most magnificent of them all. the mighty HMS Hood. she was actually designed and laid down during WW1. however she was completed too late to take part in that conflict. over the years until WW2 Hood was continually modernized and used to show the flag around the world. on May 24, 1941 the mighty Hood met her fate in the Denmark Strait. Hood was with her consort the new battleship HMS Prince of Wales. Hood opened the battle but was soon hit by one of the German ships. Bismarck may have sunk the Hood but also there is a theory that her consort the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen may have done it. it remains a mystery to this day. in any case it was a great shock to the Royal Navy and the English nation as a whole. from that point Bismarck was doomed as the Royal Navy put every resource into finding and sinking the German Battleship. these pictures are all paintings, the first is Hood underway, the second firing the first shots of the battle and the last is Hood's demise.
