El Gobernador

this is the one and only 4-10-0 locomotive built by the Central Pacific RR in 1882. designed by A.J. Stevens and put into service in 1884 El Gobernador was not a success. the largest engine extant at the time the boiler and fire box were just not big enough to produce the steam needed by the engine to operate properly. the cylinders used more steam than the boiler could make. the flexibility of the front truck and the rear drivers plus blind drivers on the 2nd and 3rd axles gave the locomotive the ability to take any curve on the Central Pacific System. although an impressive looking engine El Gobernador's poor steaming qualities caused it to be scrapped in 1894.
