biodiesel being very popular these days i thought i'd see what the first one looked like. as you can see, not very much like modern ones. the diesel was invented by Dr. Rudolf Diesel who ran the first one successfully in 1897. this one is from 1898 and it ran in an exhibition in France using peanut oil. apparently Dr. Diesel meant for his engines to be run on some sort of vegetable oil as it would benefit farmers.
