The Stirling 8 footer
Saturday, July 3, 2010
here's a picture of one of the famous Stirling 8 footers. they were called this because of the diameter of the driving wheels 8'1". designed for passenger service by engineer Patrick Stirling for the Great Northern Railway in Great Britain. this type of locomotive was used from 1870 until the last was withdrawn from service in 1907. the first one built was the last one in service and still survives to this day in England. these engines were quite fast for the day. capable of averaging at least 60mph with train in tow. in the right conditions one could make over 80mph.
